Cell phones as dangerous as drunk driving!!![center]

Is having a cell phone pressed to your ear while behind the wheel the equivalent of driving while intoxicated? According to a study by University of Utah psychologists, the answer is, unfortunately, yes.

"Just like you put yourself and other people at risk when you drive drunk, you put yourself and others at risk when you use a cell phone and drive," writes David Strayer, a psychology professor and the study's lead author. "The level of impairment is very similar."

The study, published in the June 29 issue of Human Factors: The Journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, found that drivers talking on cell phones, either handheld or hands-free, are more likely to crash because they are distracted by conversation.

Using a driving simulator under four different conditions: with no distractions, using a handheld cell phone, talking on a hands-free cell phone, and while intoxicated to the 0.08 percent blood-alcohol level, 40 participants followed a simulated pace car that braked intermittently.

Researchers found that the drivers on cell phones drove more slowly, braked more slowly and were more likely to crash. In fact, the three participants who collided into the pace car were chatting away. None of the drunken drivers crashed.

"This study does not mean people should start driving drunk," said co-author Frank Drews. "It means that driving while talking on a cell phone is as bad as or maybe worse than driving drunk, which is completely unacceptable and cannot be tolerated by society."

I agree that the use of cell phones while driving is dangerous, and is not good to drive drunk while not so risk as a handle to the phone, in the same way is very risky. We must call attention to all drivers to take into account all these provision.

5 Cell as dangerous as driving drunk phones! el Lun Dic 05, 2011 5:39 pm

I don´t believe driving because we should not use the phone either handsfree or APush in the ear and distracting the driver, is the same when a person is intoxicated normal faculties are not to drive.
drivers talking on cell distracting and can cause accidents and be run over anyone or it may cause a collision between two cars and can cause death themselves.
society must be aware of drivers not using cell phones while driving as this can prevent accidents.

I agree with the issue while driving because you can not use the phone because it can cause serious injury to drivers, as well as drunk driving. since we are starring in our own lives and if we do not care for who will? so we must be aware that while driving do not use the phone unless you do it hands-free and also see the degree of intoxication that we have. since the majority of traffic accidents is due to these situations.

If I agree.

Drunk driving is wrong with the phone to your ear while driving because it can cause serious damage to people and pedestrians who pass through the area where you drive can be neglected and crash.

I think this is true because of the two ways is that they suffer the majority of car accidents today being distracted by cell phone or being drunk driving is dangerous because you lose concentration and become the consequences of car accidents and may be increased by these two reasons should take further steps to control those drivers who put their lives at stake.

Greetings teacher.

12 I agree whit this study. el Miér Dic 07, 2011 10:47 am

I agree whit this study. because it is one of the things that is detrimental to our society at this time, the cell phone. distracts too much, that we makes clumsy management, meter rates, be aware of the traffic light, if a car comes toward us, among others. I don't know if it is more harmful to be drunk, but what we know is that as it brings much danger.

I agree with this article
as people take celualar with a very slight, but the mind wanders, that the person looking at the mind that is going to say, imagine a person who is driving has to be aware of trucks and other talking on the phone. and therefore accientes occur.
